i know a place!

michelle duarte grew up in porto, portugal, to a family that didn't care too much about the labels of it all. clothes were deemed as something practical, shopping was ocassional, and fashion was not the kind of topic people really talked about over dinner.

  • if michelle wanted to know why a handbag mattered or why one runway collection was still being talked about years later, she had to figure that out herself.

  • by middle school she'd fallen into youtube fashion week recaps, tumblr moodboards, lookbook.nu., and tons of google rabbit holes.

✱     GROWING PAINS.         michelle had never been particularly good at sitting still.

  • was the friend that would talk everyone into 'one more stop' just before heading home. also convinced her parents that a 2 hour drive to a flea market was completely reasonable.

✱     THE HUSTLE.         her first job came at 16, working handbags at a dept store called el corte inglΓ©s.

  • while many other employees came to collect their check, michelle took the opportunity to learn.

  • she watched which bags disappeared the second they dropped on the sales floor and why certain pieces just never seem to lose their appeal.

  • most weekends were spent scouring estate sales, thrift stores, and online auctions. this time had taught her how to spot authenticity, quality, and value.

✱     TREASURES.         before the storefront there was just michelle.

  • friends seeked her to source birthday gifts. leading to friends of friends asking her to track down impossible pieces. stylists eventually found their way into her DMS. with that came editors and clients she'd never met in cities she'd never visited.
